OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100

What is the STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX?

Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex is a independent test and certification organization for textiles. The label tests whether clothing items contain dangerous chemicals that are harmful for the health of both clothing workers and consumers. OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 looks further than just the textile: when a clothing item possesses this certificate, you can be assured that every thread, button and other accessories do not contain harmful substances. As the label tests for human health risks, it therefore also eliminates substances that are ecologically harmful. Items that contain the OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certificate thus do not have a bad impact on the health of factory workers and have a smaller impact on the environment than regular clothing pieces. Still, this label is not a guarantee for fair and sustainable production. Therefore you should look at other labels such as GOTS and The Fair Wear Foundation.

What does OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 check?

OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 is a international recognized label that and its criteria catalog is updated at least once a year and expanded with new scientific knowledge or important requirements. The organization tests the fabrics for several harmful and toxic chemicals that are prohibited by law. Look here for a detailed overview on the substances that are tested.

Why is this label so important?

Like many other industries, the fashion industry also uses several chemicals and substances. A part of these substances remains in our clothing, another part ends up as residual waste in nature. Some of these substances can be very harmful for the health of humans. Research has shown that toxic chemicals that were found in clothing and shoes can be linked to cancer and kidney-, lung or lever complications. OEKO-TEX ensures that harmful chemicals are not used in the production of clothing with their label. Both the makers and the wearers of the clothes profit from this!
